BIOGRAPHY
Aaron Richard Powell, born July 26, 1993 in Glovertown, Newfoundland, began writing songs in high school under the name Fog Lake, starting with ambient experiments and covers before moving into introspective original material. His debut compilation, "There's a Spirit, There's a Soul," led to the independently released debut album "Farther Reaches" in January 2013, followed by the "Holy Cross" EP on Birdtapes in June 2013.
In 2014 Powell signed to Brooklyn's Orchid Tapes and released "Virgo Indigo," a self-produced record The Fader called "sometimes-delicately-guitar-poppy, sometimes-just-ambient." He went on to release cassette-only albums like "Victoria Park" (2015) and "Dragonchaser" (2017), toured with Foxing, and later issued "Tragedy Reel" (2021), the ambient "Piano Songs" (2022) as Farewell, Alaska, and "Midnight Society" (2023).
WHY THEY'RE COOL
Fog Lake's catalog traces a decade of DIY songcraft, from early ambient experiments recorded in Glovertown to the guitar-pop and drone fusion of "Virgo Indigo," which The Fader praised as "sometimes-delicately-guitar-poppy, sometimes-just-ambient" on the "increasingly unmissable" Orchid Tapes. Powell's commitment to cassette-only releases like "Victoria Park" and "Dragonchaser," paired with a tour alongside Foxing, helped define a strand of lo-fi bedroom pop, and he later expanded into ambient instrumentals under the Farewell, Alaska moniker.
