BIOGRAPHY
Hazel English, born Eleisha Caripis, grew up in Australia and studied creative writing in Melbourne before moving to San Francisco and then Oakland in 2013. She met Day Wave's Jackson Phillips at the bookstore where she worked, and the two became frequent collaborators; her band played its first show opening for Craft Spells in San Francisco in 2015.
Her early SoundCloud tracks led to the 2016 EP Never Going Home, expanded in 2017 into the double EP Never Going Home/Just Give In on Polyvinyl, much of it co-written with Phillips. In 2020 she released her debut album, Wake UP!, split between sessions with producers Justin Raisen and Ben H. Allen.

English's songwriting draws directly from lived experience — The Skinny noted that the lyrics of "I'm Fine" were lifted straight from her own journal — turning the anxieties of a 12,000-mile move and the ache of ending relationships into hooky, melodic indie pop. Critics have tracked a real evolution: Beats Per Minute praised her early double EP for bypassing nostalgia through sheer vulnerability, while reviewers of Wake UP! (Clash, Exclaim!, musicOMH) heard a more polished, dreamy sound recalling Beach House, built with pop-minded producers like Justin Raisen.
