BIOGRAPHY
Dinosaur Jr. formed in Amherst, Massachusetts in 1984, led by guitarist and songwriter J Mascis alongside bassist Lou Barlow and drummer Murph. After three independent-label albums built their reputation, the band broke through in the UK with the 1988 single 'Freak Scene,' and the follow-up album Bug reached number 1 on the UK independent chart, staying there for 38 weeks.
Internal tension led Mascis to fire Barlow, who went on to form Sebadoh and Folk Implosion; Murph later departed as well, with Mascis taking over drumming duties before the band split in 1997. The original lineup reunited in 2005 and has released six albums since, continuing a run that critics have described as remarkably consistent.
WHY THEY'RE COOL
Dinosaur Jr. helped restore lead guitar to the center of indie rock, pairing feedback-drenched distortion with J Mascis's melodic solos in a way that, alongside peers like the Pixies, reshaped late-1980s alternative music. Mascis's playing earned him a spot at number 74 on Rolling Stone's list of the '100 Greatest Guitarists' and number 5 on a similar Spin ranking. Decades after their formation, the reunited lineup's continued output still draws serious critical attention, a testament to a sound built on volume, melody, and unresolved tension.
