Brendan Benson

BIOGRAPHY

Brendan Benson, born November 14, 1970, in Royal Oak, Michigan, is an American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist (guitar, bass, keyboard, drums). His 1996 debut, One Mississippi, featured contributions from Jason Falkner and earned positive reviews but sold poorly, leading Virgin Records to drop him. His 2002 follow-up, Lapalco, brought critical acclaim and modest commercial success. He has released eight solo albums in total, including The Alternative to Love, Dear Life (2020), and Low Key (2022). Benson's profile rose considerably when he co-founded the Raconteurs with Jack White, releasing Broken Boy Soldiers (2006) and Consolers of the Lonely (2008), both gold-certified and Grammy-nominated; the band's 2019 reunion album Help Us Stranger debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. Benson also runs his own label, Readymade Records, and has produced or co-written with artists including Robyn Hitchcock, Jake Bugg, and Young the Giant.

Benson built a career on melodic, slightly rough-edged power pop that critics compared to a distressed Xerox of Rubber Soul-era Beatles or a wearier Alex Chilton, offhand attitude and aggression tucked inside pretty melodies. After early major-label setbacks, he found sustained critical praise with Lapalco and later helped anchor the Raconteurs, a Jack White collaboration that scored a number-one album and Grammy nods. Beyond his own catalog, he has shaped records for other artists as a producer and co-writer, and he runs an independent label, making him a durable, adaptable figure across two decades of guitar-pop.
