Cory Hanson

BIOGRAPHY

Cory Hanson is a Southern California native and CalArts graduate who spent his early career as a utility player, moving through bands including Thief, Magic Mountain, Hellomynameischad, Blackagar Boltagon, together PANGEA, Meatbodies, and Mikal Cronin's group. Before settling into a steadier project, he released three albums of abstract electronic pop under the name WHITE. In 2013 he formed the Los Angeles psychedelic rock band Wand, which has released five studio albums between 2014 and 2024, including Ganglion Reef, Golem, Plum, Laughing Matter, and Vertigo. Alongside Wand, Hanson built a distinct solo catalog: the lushly orchestrated acid folk of The Unborn Capitalist from Limbo (2016), the bucolic cosmic Americana of Pale Horse Rider (2021), the guitar-heavy Western Cum (2023), and the '70s soft rock leanings of I Love People (2025).

Hanson's path from anonymous backing musician to a singular solo voice is unusually well documented. He passed through a striking number of notable Los Angeles bands before finding his footing with Wand, and his solo records show real stylistic range, from orchestrated acid folk to pedal-steel-laced Americana to guitar-forward rock. Western Cum reportedly earned "universal acclaim" from critics per Metacritic's aggregate score, and Ty Segall thought enough of him to bring him into his touring band the Muggers, a sign of respect from a well-regarded peer.
