BIOGRAPHY

R. Bavatharini, also known as Bhavatharini Raja, was born on 23 July 1976 in Madras (now Chennai), Tamil Nadu. She was the only daughter of composer Ilaiyaraaja and sister to composers Yuvan Shankar Raja and Karthik Raja, growing up inside one of South Indian cinema's most prominent musical households. She began singing professionally in the 1990s, making an early playback appearance as a child around age eight before her breakout adult debut with "Masthana Masthana" in the 1995 film Raasaiyya, composed by her father. Over a career spanning more than 30 films, she lent her voice to soundtracks in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi cinema, and later expanded into music composition, scoring Revathi's directorial debut Mitr, My Friend and contributing to films including Phir Milenge. Her final music album credit was for the Malayalam film Maayanadhi, with a posthumous playback credit appearing on The Greatest of All Time (2024). She died on 25 January 2024 in Colombo, Sri Lanka, at age 47, following treatment for liver cancer.
