BIOGRAPHY

GUM is the solo project of Jay Watson, the Western Australian drummer known for his work in Pond and Tame Impala. The alias, short for his nickname Gumby, began releasing self-produced music in 2011, with the full-length debut Delorean Highway arriving in 2014 on Spinning Top Music. Across albums like The Underdog (2018), Out in the World (2020) and Saturnia (2023), Watson has shifted between fuzz-drenched psych, robotic synth pop and crunchier rock while staying tethered to a cosmic core. In 2023 he paired with Ambrose Kenny-Smith of King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard and the Murlocs for the single "Minor Setback" b/w "Old Transistor Radio," a partnership that grew into the full collaborative album Ill Times, released on King Gizzard's P(Doom) Records in 2024.

WHY THEY'RE COOL

GUM channels the same psychedelic instincts that power Tame Impala into something more playful and restless, trading grandiosity for mood-shifting experimentation. AllMusic has noted how GUM's second record, Glamorous Damage, deliberately avoids the acidic grandeur of Watson's other projects, carving its own identity within the psych lineage. Live, GUM has shared stages with Mac DeMarco, Mini Mansions and Angel Olsen, and a 2023 review from thecosmicclash.com described the project impressing crowds at a Parish show, underscoring a reputation that extends well beyond the studio.
