Ty Segall (born Ty Garrett Segall, June 8, 1987) is an American multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, and producer from Laguna Beach, California. He first drew notice fronting Orange County garage revivalists the Epsilons before launching a solo career that has produced seventeen studio albums alongside countless EPs, singles, and collaborations.
Beyond his own name, Segall has recorded and performed in Fuzz, GØGGS, Wasted Shirt, Broken Bat, the CIA, Freckle, and earlier outfits like the Traditional Fools and Sic Alps, backed live by his Freedom Band of regular collaborators. NPR was already calling him one of the most prolific artists around by 2013, a reputation that has only grown.
WHY THEY'RE COOL
Segall's catalog resists a single description: AllMusic notes he can sound raw and confrontational (Emotional Mugger) or polished and refined (Sleeper), a one-man-band (Lemons) or leading a sprawling cast of collaborators (Freedom's Goblin). NPR called that 2018 double album practically his "PhD thesis" on rock history, while Drowned in Sound praised it as his longest yet but also his most listenable. He's since pushed further outward, scoring a documentary (Whirlybird) and pivoting to spare acoustic songwriting on Hello, Hi — restless range from an artist critics keep calling a scholar of the genre he helped define.
