BIOGRAPHY

Cat Power is the stage name of Charlyn Marie 'Chan' Marshall, born January 21, 1972, in Atlanta, Georgia, to a blues-musician father. After a nomadic childhood and dropping out of high school at 18, she joined Atlanta's indie rock scene before taking the name Cat Power, borrowed from a trucker's cap reading 'Cat Diesel Power.' She moved to New York in 1992 and released her debut single, 'Headlights,' in 1993. Her 1998 album Moon Pix, recorded with Dirty Three members Mick Turner and Jim White, deepened her sound. The Greatest (2006), her first album of all original songs, debuted at number 34 on the Billboard 200 and won that year's Shortlist Music Prize, earning a Metacritic score of 80 and a perfect 100 from Spin. Sun (2012) became her first top-ten US album, and Wanderer (2018) drew praise from Rolling Stone and NME.

WHY THEY'RE COOL

Few songwriters have matched Chan Marshall's blend of emotional rawness and discipline across three decades. The Greatest turned heads with a Metacritic score of 80 and a perfect notice from Spin, while Sun pushed her into electronic textures and her first Billboard top ten. Wanderer, praised by Rolling Stone as the work of 'a blueswoman who's seen some shit,' proved her still capable of quiet triumphs, as NME put it, cementing Cat Power's place among the most influential voices in American singer-songwriter music.
