BIOGRAPHY

Vetiver is the songwriting vehicle of Andy Cabic, formed in San Francisco in 2002. Cabic met Devendra Banhart while studying at the San Francisco Art Institute, and the two forged a close working relationship; Vetiver's self-titled 2004 debut on DiCristina featured Banhart on guitar, plus Jim Gaylord on violin and Alissa Anderson on cello, produced by Thom Monahan and including guest turns from Joanna Newsom, Hope Sandoval, and Colm O'Ciosoig. The band's early ties to Banhart and Newsom placed it within the Bay Area freak folk scene. Vetiver later signed with Sub Pop (US) and Bella Union (UK), releasing Tight Knit (2009), The Errant Charm (2011), and Complete Strangers (2015). After extensive touring, Cabic partnered with Eric D. Johnson of Fruit Bats for stripped-down acoustic shows, resulting in the 2019 EP In Real Life. Vetiver's seventh album, Up On High, arrived in October 2019. Cabic has also composed music for the documentary The Family Jams and the Sundance-screened film Smashed.

Vetiver sits at the root of the freak folk moment, with Andy Cabic's songwriting connecting directly to Devendra Banhart and Joanna Newsom through shared stages, collaborations, and a self-titled debut that pulled in Hope Sandoval and My Bloody Valentine's Colm O'Ciosoig as guests. Over seven albums and nearly two decades, Cabic has stayed consistent, moving from full-band arrangements on Sub Pop and Bella Union releases to intimate two-guitar tours with Fruit Bats' Eric D. Johnson, while also lending his ear to film scoring work that surfaced at Sundance.
